Population Statistics of Japan 2003

Population Statistics of Japan 2003

Preface:

This report was published to serve as a useful reference for understanding population trends and issues in Japan by compiling statistical data on the population of Japan from various possible sources.

The National Institute of Population and Social Security Research has made every effort to collect various reports and documents on demographic statistics of Japan as a whole and its regions as well as of the world and foreign countries.

The institute has also published many sophisticated demographic indicators, calculated by its research staff based on the compliled raw data. Latest Demographic Statistics (in Japanese) has been issued annually since 1982, comprising both of these data and its 2003 edition has just been published as Vol. 20 this January. This report is the English version of that Japanese original (2003 edition). Statistics by prefecture and international statistics that appeared in the Japanese version were eliminated in this report for the sake of reducing its volume. Thus, this report covers the latest standard statistics on the population of the whole country of Japan as of the end of January 2003. It also includes graphs of some main statistics for users convenience. We hope that this report will be used widely by a variety of users both in and outside of Japan who are interested into the population of Japan.

The report was prepared by Ryuzaburo Sato, Akira Ishikawa, and Rieko Bando of the Department of Information Collection and Analysis.

Introduction for Users

1. This statistical report covers basic statistics on population released by each statistical organization, and comprises data with relatively simple processing such as the calculation of rate, ratio and percentage. Some, however, are given a slightly high degree of processing, for example, in the calculation of stable population structure and the analysis of the contribution of the decrease of age-specific mortality rate to life expectancy.

2. The notes indicated below each table were limited to the minimum extent necessary because of space limitations. If more details are needed, refer to the original documents shown there.

3. Tables provided here include time-series tables wherever possible.

4. Figures were in general rounded off. Therefore, figures may not add up to the totals.

5. The following symbols are used in the tables:

Data not available or unknown

Figures not applicable

0(0.0)Magnitude not zero or less than half of unit employed
